CHARACTER
Character Name: Chris Hartley
Character Age: 19
Canon: Until Dawn
Canon Point: End of the game (They All Live ending.) Reapp to Hadriel from same canon point, plus game memories.
History: Wiki link! Because Until Dawn has a choice mechanic that can alter events, the major ones that affect Chris are listed below:
• And Which One Will Die - Chris chooses to save Ashley in the saw trap, and Ashley feels indebted to Chris. Josh feels betrayed and antagonizes Chris, so Chris considers violence but disarms Mike instead.
• Forewarned is Forearmed - Ashley finds the scissors, and uses them to stab Josh. Josh punches her and gives her a black eye, and Chris later hits him in payback.
• Point Blank - Chris chooses to shoot himself in the gun trap. Ashley later opens the door for Chris during the wendigo chase, saving his life.
• Left Behind - Ashley refuses to leave Chris behind in the tunnels, and decides not to investigate the voice. Chris and Ashley survive the tunnels.
• The Result Of Chaos - Chris, Sam, Mike, Ashley, and Emily escape the lodge fire.
As some additional notes, since UD is kind of ambiguous about the police interview scenes, I'm going with the implied idea that the lodge survivors are picked up separately from Matt and Jessica and therefore don't know anything about their fates as of yet. I'm also planning to assume that Mike or Sam filled Chris in on Josh being taken by wendigo!Hannah at some point between escaping the lodge and separating for the interviews, since Chris would've asked. If that isn't cool to assume please just let me know!
Personality: Until Dawn helpfully introduces each of its characters with three words to describe their personality in short; for Chris, those three are methodical, protective, and humorous. When he first comes into game the last of those traits seems the strongest, and he's presented as the group's jokester and general goofball for the first few chapters of the game. He makes stupid jokes, plays a prank on Sam and Josh, teases Jessica, and generally lightens the creepy and somber mood for a time. On top of that, he's also the nerd archetype; he loves his phone and technology and wants to become an app designer.
However, it turns out that while Chris is definitely a friendly, silly, dweeby kind of guy, his other two listed traits are much stronger than the humorous one. The first, methodical, comes out often as soon as the threats start showing up; while not hard to startle or more deeply frighten, Chris is very difficult to panic. Even in the midst of danger he keeps his calm, looking at the situation logically and step by step in order to figure out how to proceed and survive. There are three great examples of this in canon: the saw trap, the gun trap, and the wendigo chase.
In the saw trap Chris has to choose whether to save his friend and crush Ashley, or his best friend of ten years, Josh. No matter what choice he makes, he sees what he thinks is his best friend being cut in half by a saw, and he still keeps calm enough to go free Ashley and then lead the search for Sam, who is missing and presumed taken by the killer. Later, in the gun trap, he's given the option to kill Ashley or himself with the survivor then being able to escape the blades descending toward them. He has the forethought to shoot at the blades first, trying to escape the trap entirely without playing by the rules, and while it doesn't work (the bullets are blanks, unbeknownst to him) it's a smart attempt. The wendigo chase is basically what it sounds like: Chris is alone and faced with an incredibly strong and fast wendigo, which he has to hold off long enough to get back to the lodge. Considering he's never seen a monster before and only shot a gun for the first time a few hours earlier, that he stays level-headed enough to both keep track of the wendigo and shoot it quickly enough to escape is another good example of his methodical trait.
Protective, however, is more the trait that actually defines him. Although Chris is not particularly courageous he still performs some of the braver actions in the game, and they're all specifically because he is trying to protect other people. As mentioned earlier he goes back into the lodge and then through its basement and the old hotel in order to look for Sam, intent on rescuing her from what he thinks is a murderer. He also risks his life going back out into the forest to try to save Josh after learning that wendigos exist. More subtly, almost all of his actions in game end up being based on this trait in some form; he usually has options to ask his friends if they're alright or be concerned for people who are missing, most of his unplayable/cut scene actions involve trying to help other people or at least being aware of and concerned for their feelings, and one choice in particular--whether to shoot himself, Ashley, or do nothing--relies on playing out this trait because choosing to shoot Ashley means Chris can't survive the game no matter what the player does from that point on.
Aside from the three main traits listed, Chris of course has several other aspects to his personality. He's friendly and easy to get along with, though he can be a little awkward at times. He doesn't seem to be particularly insecure or shy, but he does lack confidence in some areas such as expressing his feelings toward the girl he likes. He's also not very forceful about his ideas or opinions unless they're very important, such as when he's set on finding Sam, and tends to let other people take the lead if possible; he has no problem letting Mike or Sam be in charge and just playing backup. Chris is slow to anger and quick to calm down, but while he's angry he's not the best at handling it and may resort to violence. He's pretty easy to talk down, though, since he tends to think before acting and so it isn't too difficult to convince him not to do something stupid.
Chris seems to handle most of the trauma of Until Dawn by compartmentalizing it and moving onto the next task, acting mostly like himself until he sees the stranger die after he and Chris fail to save Josh. From that point on, including in the after-game police interviews, he's very subdued and quiet.
Inventory: He has a zippo-style lighter that Josh loaned him and he never remembered to return, as well as his own iphone which has a shattered screen and no battery charge but is otherwise functional.
Abilities: Chris is a normal human, so no supernatural abilities. He's adept at using technology, especially phones, and he can do some programming though he's no super hacker or anything. He is, however, very talented at shooting a gun; the first time he uses one is in the beginning of Until Dawn, but he turns out to be an excellent shot with all three types of gun (hunting rifle, semi-automatic pistol, and shotgun) that he ends up using through the night. He's also clever and seems to have a good memory for facts and working out the logic of a situation, as well as being empathetic and able to read the emotions of his friends for the most part.
Flaws: Chris is pretty close to a cinnamon roll, but he does have some flaws. When very angry he can be violent, which is shown when he punches Josh in return for Josh hitting Ashley earlier in the night, and the player can also choose to have Chris hit Josh with a wooden plank for taunting him later on. Chris also does pretty much nothing when Mike is considering shooting Emily, as Mike thinks she's going to turn into a wendigo and so is trying to protect the others, although to be fair to Chris he's very dazed and out of it for the whole scene. He can also be nosy and somewhat insensitive on occasion, such as helping himself to Jessica's love note to Mike even though he doesn't actually read it. And, of course, there's the big one: he can choose to shoot Ashley in the gun trap, and though it's seemingly wildly out of character considering everything else it's still an option he can consider or even act on.
SAMPLES
Action Log Sample: Great. Right out of one nightmare and into another.
One moment he'd closed his eyes for a brief rest before he would be heading to the hospital, too wired to sleep but still exhausted after everything that happened, and then he'd found himself on the ground in what looked like a coliseum. For a moment he thought he had just fallen asleep and was dreaming, except that dreaming would've been more real; not like this same surreal daze that had settled over everything a few hours into the night and only grown worse as the time had gone by.
Also he's pretty sure he would be dreaming about wendigos, not about... Whatever that horrific thing is over there.
Chris is on his feet in a moment, exhausted muscles and injured leg protesting the movement, but he's somehow not yet run out of reserves of adrenaline. For the first time he registers there are other people around as well, none of which he immediately recognizes and who all look just about a surprised as he does; hopefully at least one of them has a weapon, because Chris has nothing useful on him and he's not sure running is going to be an option.
He hobbles back a step or two, both to put more distance between himself and the nearest monster and to test his leg; he doesn't fall down, so there's that at least, even if the pain is warning him he's taking a gamble. Maybe he can still run after all, because really, what is his other option? Hope he's lucky--and that's using the word 'lucky' very loosely--enough to be facing another monster with movement-based vision and therefore be able to get away with just holding still? Not likely, and even if it that were the case he wouldn't be able to just stand by while the other people here were in danger.
Think, Chris. What the hell is he going to do?
