Hello everyone! This little Wendigo guide will hopefully outline everything you need to know for the event at Hadriel, whether your character is transforming or just needs to know what they're up against. Be warned that this will contain spoilers for Until Dawn, and linked video clips may contain video game violence and gore.
GENERAL INFO
Wendigos are made up of two parts: the true wendigo itself, which is just a spirit, and the physical form of the possessed and transformed person. The spirits themselves swirl around, presumably invisible most of the time, but they do appear as firey-orange streaks of smoke with faces after a wendigo has been killed. You can see an example of this here.
When an individual is either starving and contemplating cannibalism, or has already partaken in it, a wendigo spirit can possess them. There's a short incubation period, followed by the beginning of the transformation which takes about eight more days.
A transformed wendigo looks like an incredibly thin human with elongated limbs, and are missing their eyelids and lips. They have a withered appearance to them, but retain any distinguishing marks a human had such as tattoos or scars. Because wendigo were human, they are highly intelligent and use this to help them hunt. The sound that a wendigo makes is a very distinct shriek.
WENDIGO POWERS/SPECIFICS
• Eyesight is based on movement. They appear to see in blacks and reds, as well as discerning lights and shadows, but anything that moves highlights in green. A good video of this is here. It takes only a tiny amount of movement to catch their attention.
• Tough, armour-like skin. Their skin is nearly impossible to penetrate with any blades; a character in game mentions that knives don't have any effect. Similarly, bullets don't piece their skin.
• Razor-sharp nails and teeth. A wendigo can decapitate people with just their claws and very little effort. They also have incredibly sharp teeth for eating raw--usually human--meat.
• Speed/Climbing. Wendigos move very quickly, and can cling to walls and ceilings with no problem. However, despite how fast they can move in short bursts it's possible to outrun one if a person has the open space to do so.
• Mimicy. A wendigo can mimic the voices and sounds of their prey to lure them into a trap; one does this in game, posing as Jessica to try to convince Ashley or Chris to investigate and run into the wendigo. An example of this is here.
• Strength. A wendigo is many times stronger than a human, capable of lifting at least 750lb.
• Limited immortality. Wendigos can be killed but don't die of age, and although they eat it doesn't appear necessary for them to do so to survive. The spirit itself is likely truly immortal in all regards.
WENDIGO WEAKNESSES/VULNERABILITIES
• Because a wendigo sees through movement, anyone that holds perfectly still is rendered invisible and even if the wendigo knows there's someone in the area it will eventually lose interest if it can't see them.
• Fire. Fire is a wendigo's main weakness, and it can burn through their armour-like skin and eventually kill them. Even if the wendigo is not killed by fire directly, burning off the armour leaves the wendigo open to other methods of killing it such as decapitation.
• Guns/Flare guns. Although neither will directly kill a wendigo, a shotgun blast has enough power to keep one at bay and a flare gun will force one to retreat entirely.
For a full example of sounds, movement, and a wendigo's vision, a video of the final Lodge sequence of Until Dawn is here. And if you have any questions, remember to leave them on the plotting post!
